Brake Pipes

Brake lines are important in stopping your car as they carry the hydraulic pressure from the pedal press which applies the brakes, via hydraulic fluid known as brake fluid, when pipes fail the test usually due to excessive corrosion or damage, this makes the pipe lines more likely to burst and then to brake failure. New modern pipes fitted after new are usually made of copper and so don’t corrode, at NICE MOTORS we only fit copper along with new hydraulic brake fluid, so you have peace of mind that they are less likely to fail the test again.

project 2

Boots & Gaitors

Many parts of the steering come under the inspection of the mot tester, steering joints and gaiters, boots are all looked at for perishing and splits, which if split, usually leaks grease or lubricant out of the joints onto other parts. With these joints being protected by boots and gaiters they are less prone to wear and eventually failure. The joints wear and tear are also inspected and they can wear over the years of use. Good quality replacement parts are used at NICE MOTORS therefore ensuring your steering is in a road worthy condition.

project 3

Suspension Springs

With the UK roads in a poor state of repair our suspension components are abused on a daily bases. The mot test inspects all the springs, shock absorbers and joints to assess their condition and general condition for a safe ride and keeping the vehicle safely on the road. Front and rear road springs play an important part of the suspension and they are the biggest mot failure on the suspension. At NICE MOTORS we have the correct spring compression equipment to safely replace the road springs which should not be undertaken by an inexperienced mechanic or general public.

project 4

Steering

Many parts of the steering come under the inspection of the mot tester, steering joints and gaiters, boots are all looked at for perishing and splits, which if split, usually leaks grease or lubricant out of the joints onto other parts. With these joints being protected by boots and gaiters they are less prone to wear and eventually failure. The joints wear and tear are also inspected and they can wear over the years of use. Good quality replacement parts are used at NICE MOTORS therefore ensuring your steering is in a road worthy condition.

project 5

Tyres & Wheels

The black stuff that keeps us on the road and a legal limit that the police will fine you for should they drop below.
*Correct tyre sizes on the same axle
*Correct rotation
*Inflated enough

Minimum tread depth 1.6mm over ¾ of the tread and the other ¼ must be visible; a good guide is 2 mm all over the tread as a minimum Wheels also have to be undamaged and secure to the car.

project 6

Brakes Repaired Or Replaced

Brake effort or efficiency is also tested on the mot, and for good reason. Without good brakes we are endangering our vehicles our lives and lives of other road users, so good brakes are very important. Brakes worn, seized, broken parts are all taken care of in a mot test, so little wonder that 75% of mot failures are brake parts and effort/efficiency related. At NICE MOTORS, brake disc’s and disc pads, brake linings, callipers, and cylinders, and fluid are all inspected and replaced as necessary with good quality parts, giving peace of mind that your brakes are reliable.

project 7

Lighting Replacement & Adjustment

A very important inspection of the test and an on road legal requirement is the lighting. All bulbs and light unit condition are looked at for working condition and general condition, also headlamp are normally requiring adjustment due to the vibration of the road surface in normal use. Lights working and brightness is the important bit and should be good. At NICE MOTORS we replace and adjust as required with good quality bulbs and units to keep you save and visible on the road in the day and night.

project 8

Emission Levels

The euro government set our exhaust emission levels, mot test checks the levels coming out of the exhaust, they often are not the adjustable at the time of test and the levels are set by the machine. Emission to high are usually a sign of several things i.e. faulty sensor, engine wear, and the way the car is driven. General servicing on a yearly base, keeping the engine in good order is the best prevention for the emission test, at NICE MOTORS we service and monitor the sensors on the engine which will reduce the emission levels. But from time to time the sensors do fail and therefore send the emission level to high, at NICE MOTORS we have diagnostic equipment to test the sensors and replace if required, therefore lowering the emission level.

project 9

Welding

On all vehicles corrosion or rust are also assessed, the vehicles structure too which all the cars parts are connected has to be in good strong condition, the structure made of steel over the years of use are exposed to the elements are prone to corrosion, when holes in the structure are found a good quality welding repair is accepted by the mot test, at NICE MOTORS we provide welding to structure that will repair and replace the rust and corrosion keeping your vehicle strong and roadworthy.

A Brief History Of The MOT Test

Introduced in 1960 under instruction from the Ministry Of Transport, utilising powers gained through the Road Traffic Act 1956. The aim was to create a basic test to include brakes, lights and steering to be carried out after a vehicle was ten years old and every year thereafter.

This became known as the Ministry of Trasport Test. The high failure rate resulted in a reduction of vehicle age down to 7 years old on December 31st 1961.

In 1962, the first commercial vehicle exam was created and a valid certficiate was required in order to receive a tax disc. In 1967, the testable age of a vehicle was reduced again to 3 years.

The list of items tested has been continually expanded over the years, including in 1968 – a tyre check; 1977 – checks of windscreen wipers and washers, direction indicators, brakelights, horns, exhaust system and condition of the body structure and chassis; 1991 – checks of the emissions test for petrol engine vehicles, together with checks on the anti-lock braking system, rear wheel bearings, rear wheel steering (where appropriate) and rear seat belts; 1992 – a stricter tyre tread depth requirement for most vehicles; 1994 – a check of emissions for diesel engine vehicles; 2005 – introduction of a computerised administration system for issuing non-secure test certificates. Also rolled out in 2005 was the creation of the 'Automated Test Bay' this differs from traditional testing by adding additional equipment to the bay to negate the use of an assistant during the test; 2012 – checks of secondary restraint systems, battery and wiring, ESC, speedometers and steering locks
